DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COPY AND CUT

The terms “copy” and “cut” refer to different actions in the context of digital files or text manipulation. Here are the key differences between copying and cutting:
Copy:

  1. Definition:
    • Copying refers to duplicating a selected file, text, or content, creating a duplicate that can be placed in another location.
  2. Result:
    • After copying, the original content remains in its original location, and a duplicate is created in the clipboard (a temporary storage area).
  3. Use of Clipboard:
    • Copying involves using the clipboard to temporarily store the selected content before pasting it elsewhere.
  4. Keyboard Shortcut:
    • The common keyboard shortcut for copying is usually Ctrl+C (on Windows/Linux) or Command+C (on macOS).
  5. Purpose:
    • Copying is used when you want to duplicate content without removing it from its original location. The duplicated content can be pasted in one or more different locations.
    Cut:
  6. Definition:
    • Cutting refers to removing a selected file, text, or content from its original location and placing it in the clipboard.
  7. Result:
    • After cutting, the content is removed from its original location, and a copy is stored in the clipboard.
  8. Use of Clipboard:
    • Similar to copying, cutting involves using the clipboard to temporarily store the selected content before pasting it elsewhere.
  9. Keyboard Shortcut:
    • The common keyboard shortcut for cutting is usually Ctrl+X (on Windows/Linux) or Command+X (on macOS).
  10. Purpose:
    • Cutting is used when you want to relocate content from one location to another. The content is removed from its original location, and you can then paste it elsewhere.
*In summary, copying creates a duplicate of the selected content while leaving the original in place, and cutting removes the selected content from its original location and stores a copy in the clipboard for relocation. Both actions are typically followed by a “paste” operation to place the copied or cut content in a new location.
